Which dog lead is right for your dog?

A suitable dog lead is essential equipment, together with a dog collar or dog harness, for your four-legged friend. It ensures a safe connection between you and your dog, allowing you to adjust the range of movement to the environment.

The right lead depends on your dog's size and weight, behaviour, and intended use. A classic standard lead is ideal for daily walks. In busy areas, a shorter city lead can be practical, while a long line provides significantly more freedom for your dog in open spaces.

A short lead consists of a short wrist loop with a snap hook and allows for particularly direct handling. It can be practical for larger dogs when there is limited space available. For small dogs, a very short lead distance is often impractical as you would need to bend down to the dog.

City leads and short leads are not intended for every walk. On quiet paths, your dog should have enough space for sniffing and natural movement.

Long lines for recall training and more freedom

A long line gives your dog a greater radius of movement without you needing to fully sacrifice security. It's particularly suitable for recall training, controlled walks, and dogs that cannot yet reliably run free.

Long lines come in various lengths. The appropriate length depends on the environment, your training level, and your experience handling the lead. It is best to start with a manageable length and only increase the movement radius when you can handle the long line safely.

Attach a long line to a well-fitting dog harness. When reaching the end of the lead suddenly, stronger forces can be created, which would directly affect the sensitive neck area if attached to a collar.

Ensure that the lead does not get tangled around the legs of people or dogs. Never reach unprotected into a quickly running long line and do not wrap it around your hand. Gloves can provide additional protection with longer or quickly slipping leads.

Training leads for dog school and training

A training lead is suitable for exercises where you work closely with your dog. Short models without a wrist loop and additional rings reduce distractions and allow for direct handling.

Slip leads are particularly suitable for dogs that already walk calmly on a lead. For dogs that pull strongly, are skittish, or tend to escape, a well-fitting dog harness with a separate standard lead is usually the safer choice.

Couplers for walking two dogs

Swimming leads for activities near water

Which lead is suitable for small and large dogs?

For puppies and small dogs, a lightweight, narrow dog lead with a snap hook that matches the dog’s size is recommended. A snap hook that is too heavy can pull uncomfortably at the collar or harness of a delicate dog.

For large and strong dogs, the lead should be wide enough and durable. Snap hooks, attachment rings, and seams must also match the size and strength of the dog. A softly padded wrist loop can increase comfort and feels nicer in the hand during stronger pulls.

How do you clean a dog lead?

Clean your dog lead according to the care instructions for the respective material. Leads made of nylon or mesh can be cleaned by hand or on a gentle cycle, depending on the model. Close snap hooks before machine washing and use a laundry bag to protect metal parts and the washing machine.

Biothane leads can usually be cleaned with a damp cloth or under clear water. Allow each dog lead to dry completely in the air and then check snap hooks, rings, seams, and wrist loops for damage.
