How do you find the right dog collar?

A dog collar, along with a suitable dog lead, is essential for your four-legged friend's gear. It serves as a way to attach the lead and can also hold an ID tag or name plate. To ensure your dog feels comfortable in everyday life, the collar should fit their neck circumference, body structure, and intended purpose.

How do you measure your dog's neck circumference?

To find the right collar size, you need your dog's neck circumference. Place a flexible measuring tape around the spot where the collar will sit. The tape should fit snugly without cutting into the skin. Your dog should stand still and upright during the measurement.

Then compare the measured neck circumference with the size information of the desired collar. If the value falls between two sizes, you should also consider the width, adjustable range, and body structure of your dog. The collar should neither slip over the head nor constrict the neck.

After putting it on, there should still be enough space between the collar and your dog's neck. As a guideline, depending on the size of the dog, one to two fingers should fit comfortably under the collar. Regularly check the fit – especially for puppies, young dogs, and after changes in body weight or coat.

Durable nylon dog collars

Nylon collars are lightweight, robust, and versatile. They are suitable for daily walks, attending dog school, and various activities together. Continuous or generous adjustment options allow for an individual fit to the neck circumference.

A click closure makes it easy to put on and take off quickly. Before every walk, you should check that the closure is fully engaged and that the material shows no damage. Models with load relief can prevent the pulling force from immediately affecting the closure.

Padded dog collars for more comfort

A padded dog collar has an additional layer of soft neoprene, mesh, or a similar material on the inside. The padding ensures a pleasant wearing experience and can reduce friction on the neck. This is especially useful if your dog wears their collar for an extended period.

In the Professional Comfort and Active Pro Comfort collars, durable outer material meets a soft inner layer. It's also important to properly adjust a padded model: a collar that's too loose can slip, while one that's too tight can press uncomfortably.

Dogs with long or dense fur may require a different adjustment range than short-haired dogs with a comparable neck circumference. Be careful not to pinch the fur when adjusting, and check the fit again after the coat change.

Why is load relief on a dog collar sensible?

When your dog pulls on the lead, force is exerted on the collar and its closures. A collar with load relief absorbs this pressure in such a way that it does not solely rest on the click closure. This can reduce the risk of it unintentionally opening.

Some collars have two attachment rings that are hooked into the snap hook when attaching the lead. This design relieves the closure and positions it so that it does not rest directly on the sensitive lower neck area.

If your dog frequently pulls hard on the lead, a well-fitting dog harness may be the better choice for walks. It distributes the pulling force over a larger area of the body. Lead training should be approached calmly and gradually, regardless of the equipment used.

Slip and martingale collars for dogs

A slip collar is pulled over the dog's head and requires no additional click closure. This allows for particularly quick putting on and taking off. Models with a martingale feature tighten only to a previously determined point when pulled.

The stop must be adjusted so that the collar cannot slip over the head when closed, but also does not choke the dog under tension. Therefore, measure both the neck circumference and head circumference and consider the size specifications of the respective model.

They are suitable for dog owners who prefer a collar without a click closure. Slip collars should be correctly adjusted and not confused with an unlimited choking collar.

Reflective dog collars for better visibility

In twilight, bad weather, and darkness, a dog can quickly become difficult to spot for other road users. Reflective seams or reflector stripes integrated into the material reflect incoming light and can improve your dog's visibility.

Reflective elements can be found in select collars from the Active Pro, Active Pro Comfort, and Everest series. However, they do not replace active lighting or attentive lead management. Additional safety lighting may be useful on dark paths.

Easy-care dog collars made of Biothane

Dog collars made of Biothane are particularly suited for walks in the rain, on muddy paths, or near water. The coated material absorbs little moisture and dirt and can usually be easily wiped clean. This makes it low-maintenance and quickly ready for use again.

Biothane collars are available in various colours, as classic collars and as slip models. Variants combined with leather blend the uncomplicated properties of the coated material with a high-quality, natural look.

Which collar is suitable for a puppy?

A puppy collar should be lightweight and have a sufficiently large adjustment range. Since young dogs grow quickly, you need to check the fit regularly and adjust the width in time. The collar should not hinder them when playing and running, but it should not be so loose that your puppy can slip out.

Gradually acclimate your puppy to the new collar. Start with short wearing periods in a calm environment and associate putting it on with a positive experience. A suitable lead and a well-fitting puppy harness complete the gear for the first walks and training sessions together.

How do you clean a dog collar?

Dirt, moisture, and dog hair accumulate over time on the collar. Regular cleaning helps to ensure that the material and closure remain functional for a long time. Always follow the care instructions of the respective model.

Nylon and padded collars can be cleaned by hand or in the washing machine, depending on the design. Biothane collars can usually be wiped clean with a damp cloth. Before machine washing, fasten the click closure, use a laundry bag if possible, and allow the collar to dry completely in the air afterwards.

When cleaning, check seams, attachment rings, stoppers, and closures at the same time. A heavily worn or damaged collar should be replaced to ensure your dog remains securely secured.
