Winter Coats for Dogs on Cold Days

A suitable winter coat protects your dog from the cold at low temperatures. Insulating linings and body-hugging materials help to retain their body heat. Depending on the model, the coat also provides additional protection against wind, snow, and moisture.

At WOLTERS, you'll find dog winter coats, thermal jackets, and winter coats in various sizes, designs, and fits. The range includes classic lined WOLTERS models as well as functional winter clothing from RUKKA Pets. This way, you can choose the coat according to your dog's physique, warmth needs, and activity level.

Which Dogs Need a Winter Coat?

Not every dog needs additional clothing in winter. Dogs with dense fur and a thick undercoat often cope well with low temperatures. Short-haired dogs, small breeds, and animals without protective undercoat can freeze more quickly.

Very slim dogs also have less insulating body fat and may benefit from a warm coat. Puppies, senior dogs, and animals with restricted mobility or health issues may also be more sensitive to the cold.

Individual behaviour is always crucial. Even within a breed, dogs can vary significantly in their warmth needs. Also consider whether your dog is actively walking or often stops and moves slowly during walks.

How Can You Tell If Your Dog Is Cold?

Shivering is a clear but not the only sign that a dog is cold. A tense body posture, a raised back, a tucked tail, or repeatedly lifting their paws can also indicate cold or discomfort.

Some dogs move slower, seek shelter, or want to end the walk early. Take these signals seriously and bring your dog to a protected, warm place in extreme cold. A winter coat can help but does not replace the need to adjust the duration and intensity of walks.

What Makes a Good Dog Winter Coat?

A good winter coat should provide sufficient warmth without restricting your dog's natural movements. The back, chest, and larger muscle groups should be protected. At the same time, the shoulder area and legs must remain freely movable.

A soft lining or warming inner fleece ensures comfortable wear. A higher collar can provide additional protection for the neck and throat. Adjustable straps, elastic inserts, and various closure options make it easier to adapt to your dog's physique.

In snow, rain, and damp paths, the outer material also plays an important role. Depending on the model, it is either water-repellent or waterproof. Check the respective product description, as a warm lining alone does not guarantee reliable moisture protection.

Thermal Jacket or Lined Winter Coat?

Thermal jackets for dogs are often lightweight yet have insulating linings. They are suitable for active walks where your dog produces sufficient warmth and does not need a particularly heavy coat. The light weight may also be comfortable for dogs that are not yet used to wearing clothing.

A more heavily lined winter coat offers more warmth and is particularly suitable for cold days, slow walks, or longer stays outdoors. Some models provide greater coverage of the back, chest, and hindquarters.

The terms thermal jacket and winter coat provide no definitive information about actual thermal performance. Therefore, compare the materials, linings, coverage, and weather protection of individual models.

Waterproof Winter Coats for Dogs

In snow and sleet, a winter coat should not only provide warmth but also absorb as little moisture as possible. A waterproof or water-repellent outer material protects the insulating layer and your dog's coat from moisture.

Water-repellent materials fend off light precipitation for a limited time. Waterproof materials are designed for stronger moisture protection. Whether the entire coat is waterproof also depends on seams, zippers, and other openings.

Always take note of the specific details for each model. If the coat has become wet after a walk, it should completely dry before being used or stored again.

How Do You Find the Right Size for a Winter Coat?

To select the right dog winter coat, measure your dog while standing upright. Depending on the model, you will need the back length, chest girth, and neck circumference. Use a flexible measuring tape for this.

The back length is measured from the transition between the neck and back to the base of the tail. Measure the chest girth at the widest part of the rib cage behind the front legs. The neck circumference is measured where the collar will later sit.

Compare the measurements with the size chart of the desired item. Size designations and back lengths cannot be easily transferred between different models. Also, consider whether your dog will wear a harness or an additional layer of clothing under the winter coat.

Winter Coats for Dachshunds and Dogs with Broad Chests

Dogs with special body proportions often require a specially adapted cut. Dachshunds, for example, have a long back, short legs, and a comparatively pronounced chest. A dachshund fit can better accommodate these proportions than a regularly cut winter coat.

For pugs, bulldogs, and other compactly built dogs, models with a wider chest area may be suitable. Strong musculature or very dense fur also increase the required circumference.

Do not focus solely on the back length. A jacket may appear correct on the back but be too tight in the chest area. Therefore, always check all values provided in the measurement chart.

How Should a Dog Winter Coat Fit?

A winter coat should fit snugly without constricting. Your dog should be able to walk, sit, and lie down freely in it. Pay special attention to ensure that the shoulder area, armpits, and front legs are not hindered by seams or closures.

The back area should extend close to the base of the tail without hindering the natural position of the tail. For males, the belly cut should be designed in such a way that the coat remains dry and clean when urinating.

Leg straps can prevent the coat from shifting in wind or movement. However, they must not cut in or hang loosely. After wearing, check the skin and coat for pressure points, redness, or tangles.

Winter Coats for Harness Wearers

If your dog wears a harness under the winter coat, a suitable opening in the back area is particularly practical. This is where the dog lead is attached to the connection ring of the harness. Depending on the model, the opening can be adjusted or closed with a zipper.

Check that the opening and harness ring are properly aligned and that the snap hook has enough space. The connection between harness and lead must not be obstructed by fabric.

Alternatively, a suitable harness can be worn over the coat. It must then be readjusted, as the winter coat increases the body circumference. The harness should not compress the insulating lining too much or restrict freedom of movement.

Avoid Overheating Despite Low Temperatures

A warm winter coat can trap too much heat during intense activity. This is especially true for athletic dogs, long hikes, and high-speed activities. Therefore, adjust the clothing according to temperature, wind, precipitation, and activity intensity.

During longer outings, regularly check if your dog feels very warm or damp under the coat. Excessive panting without corresponding physical exertion, restlessness, or attempts to shake off the coat can indicate that they are too warm.

During breaks, an active dog cools down quickly. A lightweight and easily put on winter coat can therefore be taken along and used during rest periods.

Reflective Details in Winter

In winter months, many walks take place at dusk or in darkness. Reflective seams, stripes, or bindings can improve your dog's visibility when illuminated by a light source.

Reflectors do not generate their own light and do not replace active lighting. Enhance the winter coat in darkness with a suitable light on the collar, dog harness, or lead.

How to Care for a Dog Winter Coat?

After the walk, remove coarse dirt, snow, and salt residues with a damp cloth. Allow a wet winter coat to dry completely in the air. Direct heat can damage sensitive materials, coatings, and fillings.

When machine washing, follow the care instructions of the respective item. Close hook-and-loop and zippers before washing and use an appropriate detergent. Avoid fabric softener if it is not permitted according to the care instructions.

Regularly check the coat for damaged seams, closures, leg loops, and worn areas. Only an undamaged and properly fitting winter coat can fulfill its intended functions.
